Dr. Marina Vujnovic's book "Forging the Bubikopf Nation: Journalism, Gender and Modernity in Interwar Yugoslavia" was published by Peter Lang Publishing. Dr. Vujnovic spent two years researching this topic while completing her doctorate in Iowa.
Kristine Simoes, M.A., director of the public relations/journalism program and specialist professor of public relations, has successfully completed the Examination for Accreditation in Public Relations, entitling her to use the APR professional designation.

DR. CHAD DELL AND AARON FURGASON
Dr. Chad Dell and Dr. Aaron Furgason presented a paper titled "Is Localism the Answer?: The Public Interest Radio Project" at The Radio Conference 2009: A Transnational Forum at York University in Toronto, Canada. In March, Dr. Dell presented two papers at the New Jersey Comunication Association conference: "Added Values in Television Drama Courses" and "Increasing Writing Proficiency and Avoiding Grading Preconceptions in the Writing Intensive Class," and he was a presenter and chair of a third panel, "Campus Media Roundtable: Challenges and Opportunities." Finally, Dr. Dell produced and directed his colleague Dr. Deanna Shoemaker in her solo presentation, "Mamafesto! (Why Superheroes Wear Capes)," which was recorded live in the Monty Television Studio before a standing-room-only audience.
DR. AARON FURGASON
Dr. Aaron Furgason's paper was accepted for publication by the Journal of Popular Music History. The paper examines and critiques the Recording Industry Association of America's reaction to the p2p file-sharing site Napster.
DR. SHEILA McALLISTER-SPOONER
Dr. Mcallister-Spooner's Article "Whos site is it anyway? Expectations of college Web sites," was published in the Public Relations Journal.
Dr. Mcallister-Spooner's Article "Fulfilling the dialogic promise: A ten-year survey on the dialogic principles of public relations," was published in the Public Relations Review.
DR. ELEANOR NOVEK
Dr. Eleanor Novek presented a paper at the 10th Communication Ethics Conference at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in June, 2008.
Dr. Novek also chaired a panel and presented a paper in November at the Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association in Philadelphia. For the panel on Violence & Society, she presented a paper titled, "The jailhouse doesn't rock: Why Americans tolerate an out-of-control prison system," based on representations of incarceration in film, TV, fashion, toys, and tourism.
DR. MICHAEL PHILLIPS-ANDERSON
Dr. Michael Phillips-Anderson was the conference planner for the pre-conference seminar, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Conference: A Seminar on Humor and Communication," held at the annual meeting of the National Communication Association in San Diego.
Dr. Phillips-Anderson also presented "The Current State of Inquiry in Humor and Communication" and served as the respondent for "Theorizing Media: Film, Television, and Censorship" Communication and Rhetorical Theory Division.
Dr. Michael Phillips-Anderson presented "Sojourner Truth, Rhetorical Humor, and Textual Authenticity," at the Gender Studies Research Forum at Monmouth University.
Dr. Phillips-Anderson also presented "Queen or Harlot? The Role of Rhetoric in the Liberal Arts" at the Masters of Arts in Liberal Arts Colloquium, and "History of Presidential Debates," at the Communication Colloquium, Department of Communication, both held at Monmouth University.
Dr. Phillips-Anderson had papers accepted for two conferences in May 2008. He presented "Rhetorical Humor and Textual Authenticity: Sojourner Truth's 1951 Akron Speech," at the Rhetoric Society of America conference in Seattle and "The Rhetorician and the Philosopher: Chaïm Perlman and Leo Strauss on Natural Right," at The Promise of Reason: The New Rhetoric After 50 Years conference at the University of Oregon.
Phillips-Anderson received a Grant-in-Aid for Creativity from Monmouth University for archival research for "Leo Strauss and the Rhetoric of Political Philosophy."
SPECIALIST PROFESSOR ROBERT SCOTT
Professor Rob Scott recently worked with the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) at the University of Southern California to provide live blog reports from the show floor of the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. He detailed the experience for Monmouth University students and faculty at a graduate colloquium on February 10. CES reporting was made available to all of the Hollywood entertainment studios and ETC member companies including Sharp, Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent, Thomson, and Lucasfilm, among others. Sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association, CES is the largest tradeshow in North America and showcases emerging trends in consumer electronics and entertainment content. In addition to daily live video and text reporting, the team published a 50-page post-show report that focuses on this year's trends including new Blu-ray Disc functionality, BD Live interactive features, 3D TV technologies, "Green" initiatives, and more. Professor Scott is currently working with executives at ETC and The Walt Disney Company to plan coverage of April's National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention.
DR. DEANNA SHOEMAKER
Dr. Deanna Shoemaker's article "Pink Tornados and Volcanic Desire: Lois Weaver's 'Femme(nini)tease' in Faith and Dancing: Mapping Femininity and Other Natural Disasters," was accepted for publication in Text and Performance Quarterly, 27 (4), October 2007, 317-333. This article was also selected as one of the 3 Top Contributed Papers in Performance Studies and presented at the National Communication Association conference in November 2006.
DR. DON SWANSON
Dr. Donald Swanson serves on the advisory board of the Corporate Communication International (CCI) and is a program planner for the June conference in Wroxton, UK, and serves as a board member of the Monmouth County Arts Council and leads the task force on membership.
Dr. Swanson continues as the co-chair of the Long Branch Cable Television Commission which is conducting hearings and negotiations for cable television refranchising for the City of Long Branch.
At the National Communication Association 94th Convention in San Diego, Dr. Swanson presented the paper, "Adapting the Training and Development Course to a Hybrid Format," and was a panelist on the program, "Getting Started and Creating Early Success in the Training & Development and Consulting Fields."
Dr. Swanson conducted a full-day workshop for CLDP, the Civilian Leadership Development Program, titled "Research and Preparation of the Capstone Project," at Fort Monmouth, NJ.
Following the final presidential debate and the final "Debate Watch" at MU, Dr. Swanson appeared and provided commentary on each of the news segments from 6:30-8:30 a.m. covering various segments of the debate on Channel 12 New Jersey.
DR. MARINA VUJNOVIC
Dr. Marina Vujnovic's book "Forging the Bubikopf Nation: Journalism, Gender and Modernity in Interwar Yugoslavia" was published by Peter Lang Publishing. Dr. Vujnovic spent two years researching this topic while completing her doctorate in Iowa.
Dr. Vujnovic's article "The political economy of Croatian television: Exploring the impact of Latin American telenovelas" was published in the December issue of The European Journal of Communication Research.
The article explores the implications of the emerging new players in the global arena of telenovelas. Latin American telenovelas have had phenomenal success in the post-communist countries of Eastern Europe. There has been an effort to localize the genre of telenovelas in some of those countries. The Croatian case emerges as a specific example because of its recent trend in the domestic production of telenovelas.
