Advising Principles
Advisors endeavor to provide guidance to students in a mentoring environment by challenging them to explore values and interests, develop aptitudes and skills, discuss curricular decisions, and think critically about their educational and career decisions.
Student Advising Role
- 1. Connect with Your Advisor:
- a. Know the name, location, phone number, e-mail address, and office hours of your faculty advisor.
- b. Stay in contact with your advisor through e-mail, phone, and in-person meetings.
- c. Discuss major and career interests with your advisor.
- d. Let your advisor know when you are experiencing difficulties.
- 2. Understand Your Major and Graduation Requirements:
- Review your Monmouth University catalog.
- Be familiar with your major’s curriculum and sequence charts.
- Check your academic audit.
- 3. Understand University Policies and Procedures:
- Review the Student Handbook.
- Review the University catalog.
Advisor Spotlights
Dr. Rebecca Sanford
Dr. Rebecca Sanford
Dr. Rebecca Sanford, assistant professor in communication, was awarded the Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit by the National Academic Advising Association at the association’s national conference in Baltimore, Maryland, October 2007. Dr. Sanford had been nominated by the First Year at Monmouth program, where she advises more than fifty students. Dr. Sanford also advises students in the Communication Department.
Dr. Terri Rothman
Dr. Terri Rothman
Dr. Terri Rothman, associate dean for the School of Education, was appointed to the NACADA Journal Editorial Board in 2005. As a member of the Editorial Board, she reviews journal manuscripts and attends Editorial Board meetings at the annual National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) conference. Board members discuss scholarship and publishing in the field of advising. Currently, the board is discussing strategies to encourage and facilitate scholarship endeavors in the field of academic advising. Dr. Rothman presented at the Region 1 conference in Saratoga Springs, NY, in March 2009 on “Writing for NACADA: The NACADA Journal, Academic Advising Today, and the Clearinghouse.”
