Skills Workshop Schedule

Workshops at the Tutoring Center

The Tutoring Center will be offering workshops in a variety of College Success Skills including organization & time management, note taking & listening, textbook reading strategies, and test taking strategies throughout the spring 2011 semester.

All workshops will be approximately one hour in length. Daytime workshops will be held in the Center for Student Success (CSS). Evening workshops will be held in Mullaney Hall.

Organization and Time Management: A New Semester!

This workshop will address skills and strategies associated with having good organization and time management skills. Students should bring their planners and course syllabi with them for application of skills addressed.

Textbook Reading Strategies: Active vs. Passive Reading

This workshop will involve a brief discussion about how students need to make college level textbooks work for them. Students will identify new strategies; learn the philosophy behind the strategy and the benefits. Detailed discussion and modeling of strategies will be incorporated into this workshop.

This workshop will address how to use appropriate strategies for taking objective and subjective tests. Students will also learn how to identify key words and phrases, gain an understanding as to what kind of information an essay question is seeking, and learn how to write an effective answer.

APRIL

Stress Management for Academics: Developing a Plan of Action

This workshop will address the fact that all college students will have periods of stress and tension. However, the key is to be able to identify those things that cause you stress and then come up with a plan of attack to deal with them. Students will learn to recognize that the stress will not go away but you can learn to manage it a more successfully and function better.
